OUR COMMITTEE

Our Executive Committee

The Limestone County Democratic Executive Committee (LCDEC) is comprised of local Democrats elected by popular vote. The LCDEC conducts the Limestone County Democratic Party’s general business, approves its budget, coordinates Democratic campaign activity, and endorses candidates for local offices.

The Executive Committee meets on the 3rd Thursday of every even-numbered month at 7:00pm at the Limestone Democrats Headquarters located at 22143 Hwy 72 East in Athens. Meetings are open to all interested Democrats.

KEN HINES, Chair

Ken is a former research director and lobbyist for the Kentucky Education Association, A lifelong Democrat and active member of the Limestone County Democrats since 2016, Ken was elected as the Executive Committee Chair in 2018.

ELAYNE SHELTON, Vice Chair

Raised in Huntsville, Alabama, Elayne is the daughter of a PhD physicist rocket scientists (one of the original rocket scientists working for Wernher von Braun) and a public school teacher. She is a graduate of Grissom High School in Huntsville and received her BS in Chemical Engineering from Auburn University in 1976. Elayne has received numerous awards including a YWCA Woman of Achievement Award for outstanding performance in business. She has two research patents and currently works as a consultant on Redstone Arsenal.

Elayne’s husband Gordon and her three children, share and inspire her commitment to standing up for Democratic values and principles.

Outside of her full-time career, and her responsibilities as the newly elected Vice Chair of the Limestone Democrats, Elayne makes time to volunteer with Wild South (an organization that protects the Bankhead Forest) and SNAP (Spay Neuter Action Project), an organization that helps rescue, foster, and find homes for kittens and cats throughout North Alabama.

Elayne enjoys running, lifting weights, and spending time with her three children, two horses, two dogs, and many rescue cats.

CURTIS TURNER, Treasurer

A true Limestone County native, Curtis was born in Athens, Alabama and attended the historical all-black Trinity High School, the only place in Limestone County where black children could receive a high school education until it closed its doors in the 1970s.  Curtis went on to graduate from Tanner High School and attended the University of Louisville, Chattanooga State College and Berea College. It was in college that Curtis developed his lifelong commitment to community organizing, democratic politics and political activism. Following six years of military service in the US Army, Curtis then when on to work with the Tennessee Valley Authority in nuclear power operations where he retired after 28 years.

Curtis has held office, been a board member, or volunteered for the Limestone County Vietnam Veterans Association (lifetime member), the NAACP, the Limestone County Prison Advisory board, the Limestone Madison and Madison City Community Action Board. He has also been active in Big Brother for Big Brothers-Big Sisters, the Diversity Task Team for the Limestone County School System, the Athens-Limestone Foundation on Aging, and the Cancer Society fundraising team.

LUCILE SCOTT, Secretary

A lifelong Democrat, Lucile Scott was born and raised in Perry County Alabama and moved to Limestone County in 2002. Lucile was unanimously elected to serve as the Secretary of the Limestone County Democratic Executive Committee in August 2019. She is committed to voting and getting others involved in the process. She was a volunteer on the Roger Williams for Commission Chairman campaign in 2018, and since then has helped to train democratic volunteers and register hundreds of voters at numerous registration events.

Lucile received a Bachelors’ Degree in Business Administration from Alabama A&M University. She spent more than 30 years working as a Human Resources Specialist for the Federal Government, retiring from the Department of the Army at Redstone Arsenal in January 2012.

Our teams work every day to strengthen our party and to promote our Democratic values.

Team volunteers recruit and train candidates and their staffs, raise money for Democratic activities and campaigns, register voters, communicate with Limestone County residents, and work with our grassroots partners and allies to engage, organize, and train volunteers and activists all across North Alabama.

PLANNING, RESEARCH & DATA TEAMS

Our Planning Team is responsible for planning, coordinating, implementing, and monitoring the strategic direction of the Limestone County Democrats. Our Research and Data Team ensures Limestone County residents get the facts about politicians and their policies before heading to the ballot box. Our volunteers pour over public records, campaign finance reports, articles, interviews, books, legislation, and more to help Limestone County residents gain a deeper understanding of the local and national issues impacting our region and hold republicans accountable.

COMMUNICATIONS TEAMS

Our Communications Teams work to give the Limestone County Democrats a voice and visibility. Our editorial and PR volunteers are responsible for the managing the exchange of information and ideas between our local Party and the public-at-large, both online and through the press.  Our Graphics, Social Media and Web team members manage our communication platforms, channels and promotional materials. Our Outreach volunteers manage our public outreach partnership building activities.

RESOURCE TEAMS

Our Resource Team volunteers are responsible for the day-to-day operational support and resource management, including our office space, volunteers, event planning and management, and fundraising support.

CAMPAIGN & GOTV TEAMS

Our Campaign Support Team volunteers work closely with residents, businesses, grassroots organizations, and our Party to identify and recruit highly-qualified candidates for public office. They support and train democratic nominees and their staffs.

Our GOTV and Voter Registration Teams coordinate and supervise all activities involving grassroots organization, recruitment and training of volunteers, “get-out-the vote” (GOTV) activities, voter registration and all other political organizational efforts at the local level.

OUR SDEC MEMBERS

State Democratic Executive Committee

Limestone County’s SDEC representatives are popularly elected from the five (5) State House Districts representing Limestone County residents (see district map below.)

One (1) man, one (1) woman, or, depending on the total vote for each individual, one (1) nonbinary candidate and either one (1) male or (1) female candidate, shall be elected from each district.
